It would be very useful if there was a feature in Clarity to trace the use
of HPLC Columns. There would need to be a database of columns available in a
given lab, with their serial number etc, and then the facility in a method
to link to a particular column. It should then increment a “number of
injections” counter each time an injection is made, and also record which
methods (and hence which solvents) were used.
You might hate me for even suggesting this, but if you do go with this idea,
it would be nice if the system could then prompt at the end of a sequence
for the column to be flushed and record the solvent in which it is stored.
I guess this could be an additional module. But for me it would be very
useful, and I only have about 30 columns, so for a big laboratory it would
be very useful.
Best regards
Stuart

We have invented such a device some years ago and it was implemented
into CSW32. Regrettably response was quite poor, we had been some
years ahead of time. Read details her:

We´d be glad to relaunch the system.

I vote for this and encourage Data Apex to give it a thought in newer
versions of clarity software. This would help HPLC laboratories a greatly.
Kind regards,

Thanks for tip and discussion
We are thinking about it. Is there anybody else who would benefit from such feature? If yes, please respond and comment the idea from Stuart. What set of tasks would you expect from the column tracing? Any ideas how you would like to use it? Are other related features that were not mentioned and that will be necessary for using the column tracing in your lab?
As Werner mentioned we have implemented column tracing for Agnos in ancient versions of our software (CSW17), maybe now its time is coming. At that time it was a kind of control module that communicated directly with the column. A control module is quite complicated to develop and its use is then limited only to certain type of column.
So Stuarts idea sounds more reasonable than that. Stuart asks for semi-automatic solution where it is on the responsibility of the user to set the proper type of column control which coluns is currently used and Clarity is expected to provide solution for easier entering of data (database of used columns, automatic incrementing, storing of solvent etc.).

Dear Petr,
here my answers:

Yes, all user who have to follow 21 CRF and related: trace back what
has happend.

No, it is no limited to a ceratin column, the transponder can be
mounted to any column. Preferably it comes with the column from the
filling company

Yes, that is exactly what it can. If an improper column is mainted (
that means NH2 instead of RP18 for example ) or a column which is
too old ( too many injections, e.g. number of injections > 2000 or
whatever defined from the lab manager. )

that is the only task which is not yet implemented. But we provide a
machine to write onto the tag and sign electrinicall, that needs not
to be done from Clarity. Clarity shall only READ data from the column
and add number of injection +1 with each chromatogramm.
I will prepare a folder with all information available and send to
you.

HPLC Column Traceability
Dear Werner
I am looking forward for the folder with completed information.
Ad - "Yes, all user who have to follow 21 CFR and related: trace back what
has happened."
I meant: Is here on the list anybody who uses Clarity, tracks columns, and would also vote for this feature? And eventually who also has some tips or suggestions on how to implement the tracking feature to be of some help to perform this task?
One possibility is to make an interface that could be used also without the special transpoder (a lot of things would have to performed manually) with the possibility of upgrading to the automatized solution (e.g. Agnos)
have a nice weekend
