Instrument not communicating with computer

Post by Dan »

Hi,

We just installed the clarity software and everything appears to have
installed properly. The problem is that both our GC (HP 5890 series 2)
and HPLC (HP 1100) are not communicating with the software. We have the
GPIB interface card installed for the HPLC and we are trying to use the
com port for the GC.

When trying to autodetect both instruments we get a warning message
saying the instrument isn't connected. We manually configured the HPLC
and when we restarted the clarity software to run the HPLC, the software
sent back a message, for each component (Quatpump, DAD etc...), saying
that it wasn't connected.

Please let me know what needs to be done to fix this problem.

Thanks

Trevor

Instrument not communicating with computer

Post by Ivan Vins »

Dear Trevor,

please send me the diagnostic files as described in the Support note

http://www.dataapex.com/sharedScripts/d ... .php?id=61

it will enable me to see some typical problems quickly. The record of communication activated by amending the corresponding sections of the commdrv.ini file can be also helpful. Also please check the Troubleshooting sections of the Clarity Agilent 5890 and Agilent 1100 manuals for some hints.

5890 - ensure you have correct communication board installed in the GC and that it is set to the RS232 mode (all dipswitches to the outer edge). Check the cables and connections. For Add On Com ports (PCI or USB) it is necessary to have a correct drivers installed and they must support the 2 stop bits (we have encountered USB-COM converters not supporting this option).

1100 - check that the GP-IB board name and ID numbers for the board and instrument are set correctly. The 1100 should be on and initialized before the communication is attempted. The Agilent I/O libraries must be installed, the VISA assistant can be used to check that the detector is connected, however it must not be active when communicating with Clarity.

Best regards

I got the GC up and running and IO lib is telling me there are problems
with the connection between the computer and instrument. Im working on
that now. I will get that file to you guys if there are still problems
once everything is working properly with io.

Best,
